The environmental footprint of AI is immense, and water consumption remains a primary point of friction. Servers generate staggering amounts of heat, requiring millions of gallons of water for evaporative cooling. While dumping raw urine into a cooling tower would be a maintenance nightmare—clogging systems with salts and minerals—the underlying logic of using recycled water is already standard practice in industrial engineering.
Experts note that data centers are increasingly acting as anchors for local water infrastructure. By investing in treatment facilities that utilize reverse osmosis and membrane bioreactors, companies can tap into sewage and wastewater flows rather than drawing from municipal drinking supplies. In Loudoun County, Virginia, which hosts over 250 data centers, recycled water currently accounts for 43% of total daily usage. However, scaling this remains difficult; rural data centers often lack the proximity to the large-scale treatment plants required to make the transition viable.
