Development in the region has historically lagged as industry players prioritized conventional deposits. However, mounting concerns over potential supply shortages on Australia’s east coast—driven by heavy long-term export obligations—have accelerated the push into shale. Companies Tamboran Resources and Beetaloo Energy will direct the initial output to Darwin to stabilize local supply while assessing depletion rates in these inaugural wells.
Tamboran Resources CEO Todd Abbott projects that production could eventually scale to over 1 billion cubic meters daily, potentially increasing Australia’s total liquefied natural gas export capacity by 9%. Japan, the primary buyer of Australian gas, has already signaled confidence in the region’s potential; earlier this year, Inpex acquired acreage from Formentera Partners to secure a stake in the play.
