Idaho National Laboratory probes security of Chinese lidar sensors

The Idaho National Laboratory is investigating whether Chinese-made lidar sensors pose a national security risk to American autonomous vehicles. Funded by private industry players, the review seeks to determine if the hardware could be exploited for espionage or mass disruption as adoption among U.S. automakers continues to climb.

While the laboratory has declined to comment on the scope of its research, the inquiry comes as Washington intensifies scrutiny over the integration of Chinese technology into domestic infrastructure. Lawmakers, including Senator Tammy Baldwin and Congressman John Moolenaar, have raised alarms that these sensors could function as conduits for data exfiltration or provide Beijing with the ability to remotely disable vehicle fleets. The debate is fueled by the rapid price drop of lidar, which has plummeted from $75,000 per unit a decade ago to a few hundred dollars today, largely due to the manufacturing scale of companies like Hesai and RoboSense.

Industry experts warn that the risk profile extends beyond simple supply chain dependency. Omer Keilaf, CEO of Innoviz, suggests that the sophisticated data captured by lidar could be easily compressed and transmitted via cellular connections, turning high-resolution mapping tools into potential intelligence assets. Although Chinese suppliers remain on the Department of Defense’s 1260H list for alleged military ties, they are not currently restricted from the commercial automotive market. As U.S. manufacturers weigh the cost-saving benefits of these components against mounting regulatory pressure, the industry remains in a state of uncertainty regarding future federal bans.
