US Army Bets $2.2 Billion on Nuclear Microreactor Deployment
The U.S. Army is fast-tracking the transition to portable nuclear power, awarding up to $2.2 billion to five private companies to construct microreactors at domestic military installations. This initiative aims to secure operational capacity by 2028, positioning these compact energy sources as the primary solution for remote and critical infrastructure resilience.
These microreactors, designed to generate between 1 MW and 20 MW of thermal energy, offer a departure from traditional nuclear infrastructure. Unlike conventional plants, these units are factory-assembled and transportable by truck or aircraft. They utilize higher concentrations of uranium-235 and are engineered to operate for up to a decade without refueling, featuring self-adjusting safety systems that minimize the need for specialized onsite staff.
The Department of Energy is currently backing this push to quadruple domestic nuclear capacity by 2050, bolstered by federal regulatory streamlining. Private sector milestones are already surfacing; Texas-based Aalo recently achieved criticality for its test reactor in under eight months, focusing on power solutions for AI data centers.
For the military effort, the Army selected five contractors to lead development across key bases: Antares Nuclear at Fort Bragg, BWX Technologies at Fort Campbell, General Atomics at Fort Hood, Radiant Industries at Fort Benning, and Westinghouse Government Services at Fort Drum. Jeff Waksman, the principal deputy assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and environment, emphasized that this program acts as a catalyst to push emerging reactor technologies past current development hurdles. Beyond military utility, these modular systems are expected to provide clean, reliable energy to rural grids and serve as critical assets during emergency disaster responses.
