Nebraska Feedlot Launches Large-Scale Manure-to-Gas Project

In Broken Bow, Nebraska, a new facility is transforming cattle waste into 1.2 million MMBtu of natural gas annually. By installing eight anaerobic digesters at the Adams Land & Cattle feedlot, developers aim to supply pipeline-quality renewable fuel while capitalizing on the rising global demand for lower-carbon energy alternatives.

Neogenyx Fuels, the company behind the site, views the project as a bridge between domestic agriculture and international maritime markets. CEO Michael Bakas stated that the conversion process fosters local economic growth and provides farmers with vital income diversification. The EPA supports such biogas recovery, noting that these systems promote rural development and energy autonomy by creating closed-loop agricultural cycles.

Yet, the expansion of digester technology faces significant opposition. Critics, including 15 members of Congress, argue that subsidizing these facilities entrenches large-scale industrial farming practices that threaten local air and water quality. While proponents claim the technology traps methane and reduces odor, environmentalists warn that lucrative carbon credit programs might inadvertently incentivize herd consolidation. As the facility prepares to offset roughly 63,700 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year, the debate persists over whether these plants solve an environmental crisis or merely sustain the industrial systems that created it.
