European Gas Prices Hit Two-Year High Amid Supply Fears

Dutch TTF natural gas futures climbed 2% to 74.82 euros per megawatt-hour on Tuesday, marking the highest trading levels since the 2022-2023 energy crisis. The surge reflects deepening market anxiety as geopolitical instability in the Middle East threatens to choke off critical liquefied natural gas shipments ahead of the winter season.

European Gas Prices Hit Two-Year High Amid Supply Fears

The current price point surpasses January 2023 figures, signaling a return to acute volatility as Europe struggles to replenish its reserves. Storage facilities are currently filled to less than 70% capacity, a stark decline compared to the 82% recorded at this time last year and well below the five-year average of 80%. This shortfall leaves the continent with one of its lowest winter cushions in two decades.

Escalating tensions near the Strait of Hormuz have effectively crippled supply routes from Qatar, forcing European buyers into an aggressive bidding war. Analysts at Timera Energy noted that European markets are actively pricing up to outcompete Asian importers for marginal LNG cargoes. With Asian spot prices also reaching levels unseen since 2022, Kpler analyst Go Katayama warned that a colder winter could trigger an intense global fight for fuel, further straining the already tight and inflexible energy infrastructure.
