The project involves installing a single platform in shallow waters near Bonny Island, connected by a 22-kilometer pipeline to the Nigeria LNG export facility. At its peak, the field will produce 350 million cubic feet per day, accounting for roughly one-third of the gas required for the facility’s ongoing Train 7 expansion. This upgrade will push the plant's total capacity from 22 million tons per annum to 30 million tons.
TotalEnergies Greenlights Ima Gas Project to Feed Nigeria LNG Expansion
TotalEnergies has finalized its investment decision for the Ima gas field offshore Nigeria, targeting a 2028 production start-up. The development, operated alongside local partner AMNI, aims to secure a critical supply boost for the Nigeria LNG plant as global energy firms pivot toward regions outside Middle Eastern chokepoints.
Nicolas Terraz, president of exploration and production at TotalEnergies, stated the project would create lasting value for Nigeria while emphasizing its low-emission design. The infrastructure will feature electric power supplied from the shore and permanent methane monitoring to eliminate flaring. This move mirrors a broader industry trend where companies like Chevron are diversifying supply chains away from high-risk zones like the Strait of Hormuz, prioritizing assets in Africa and other stable regions to meet global demand.
