Starlink Restrictions Lifted for Ukrainian Military Operations

Ukrainian Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara confirmed that Starshield connectivity has returned to normal levels, ending a 10-day period of service disruptions that compromised frontline drone operations. While the system is functional again, the military continues to run diagnostic tests to determine why the service was throttled during active combat missions.

Starlink Restrictions Lifted for Ukrainian Military Operations

For over a week, Ukrainian drone operators faced a critical technical bottleneck: whenever unmanned aerial vehicles reached speeds near 100 miles per hour, they lost internet access. This connectivity loss forced units to pilot drones at slower speeds, significantly increasing their vulnerability to enemy fire and causing the loss of several assets. The restoration of service follows reports that President Donald Trump contacted SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday to advocate for the system's full reinstatement.

Musk has previously justified limits on Starlink by citing violations of the company’s terms of service, specifically alleging that the military used the network to facilitate offensive drone strikes. Despite these friction points, the SpaceX CEO has acknowledged the strategic necessity of his technology, noting that a complete shutdown of Starlink would cause the Ukrainian front line to collapse. Neither SpaceX nor the administration has provided a formal explanation for the specific technical restrictions that hampered the military over the past ten days.
