This move arrives as Tesla pivots its retail strategy, increasingly framing its vehicles as hardware platforms for software sales. During recent earnings discussions, finance chief Vaibhav Taneja noted that showroom visitors are prioritizing FSD demonstrations over specific vehicle models like the Model 3 or Cybertruck. Tesla reported that approximately 1.7 million customers have purchased the software globally, with North American adoption rates jumping to 75% for new deliveries in the third quarter.
Tesla and Turo Partner to Expand FSD Rental Access
Renters on Turo will soon see which Tesla vehicles come equipped with Full Self-Driving (Supervised), marking a strategic push to turn rental cars into long-term test drives. The collaboration grants participating hosts a one-month free trial of the software, directly linking Tesla’s API to the rental marketplace’s inventory.
For Turo, the integration targets growing consumer curiosity, particularly among younger travelers. Turo CEO Andre Haddad cited internal research indicating that 71% of Gen Z consumers are interested in driverless technology. By surfacing FSD-enabled listings, the company aims to capitalize on the popularity of Tesla’s fleet, which already dominates the top of its rental charts. While the platform will feature prominent warnings and tutorials to ensure safety, the partnership provides a rare bridge for potential buyers to experience the system outside of a traditional dealership setting.
