QatarEnergy Extends LNG Force Majeure Through 2026

Global energy markets face a deepening supply crunch as QatarEnergy extends its force majeure on LNG deliveries through the end of 2026. This disruption, initially triggered in April, leaves major importers in Europe and South Asia scrambling for replacement cargoes at record-high spot market prices heading into winter.

Italy’s Edison confirmed receiving notice that three additional scheduled LNG cargoes at the Adriatic terminal will not be delivered, marking a significant blow to European supply security. The situation mirrors volatility in Asia, where Bangladesh’s Petrobangla faces an acute financing strain. Chairman Abdul Mannan noted that while the company is seeking spot market alternatives, the exorbitant costs are rapidly inflating import bills.

Pakistan faces a particularly steep financial burden, with estimates suggesting the government must pay over $1 billion to secure ten spot cargoes for the winter months. These purchases come at double the cost of previous long-term Qatari contracts. The supply shortfall, exacerbated by stagnant transit flows through the Strait of Hormuz, has pushed European benchmark prices at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility to $108.51 per megawatt-hour. This level represents the highest valuation since the 2022 energy crisis, signaling a difficult heating season for both industrial and residential consumers across the region.
